Cheng Yi, who starred in Mysterious Lotus Casebook, is one of those performers who is ideally suited for historical dramas. In addition to the much-awaited Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Sword and Beloved, the 34-year-old actor has just finished filming Fu Shan Hai, which translates to “Go to the Mountains and Sea.”
Wuxia with a twist on transmigration
In order to create a genuinely unique martial arts environment, the producers disclosed that 135 days were spent filming. Following the tale of Xiao Mingming, a contemporary guy who previously enjoyed martial arts novels but had his ideals tempered by reality, Fu Shan Hai adds a new dimension to the Hong Kong-based Malaysian wuxia author Woon Swee Oan’s novel Shenzhou Qixia (神州奇俠). From the viewpoint of Xiao Qiushui, the protagonist of the book, he transmigrates in some way and sets off on a voyage across the martial arts realm. He appears to have a second identity as Li Chenzhou. What starts out as the story of a low-ranking swordsman with a fiery spirit turns becomes a tale of a hero committed to defending his hometown and loved ones.
The cast of Fu Shan Hai
Known as the “King of Spitting Blood,” Cheng Yi does have a taste for sad hero parts. Although the concept of entering a new planet appears to be a peculiar fusion of humor and wuxia, he even sports the same white hair that he has worn in previous dramas.
Xu Zhenxuan, Liu Mengrui, Ding Xiaoying, Zhang Junning, Zhang Xiaochen, Guli Nazha, Singaporean actress Eleanor Lee, and Cheng Yi lead the large cast of Fu Shan Hai. Veteran actresses including Taiwanese martial arts actress Cynthia Khan, who is making her acting comeback, and Hong Kong icon Jackie Lui also make many cameos in the drama. Additionally, Tong Mengshi makes a guest appearance, and Julian Cheung plays a special leading role. Yukee Chen Yuqi and Xiao Yan also make special appearances.
