When a new product or expansion set is announced, it’s always an exciting moment for the Pokemon community. Just a few days remain till Twilight Masquerade launches, and fans of Pokemon are talking about it a lot as of this writing.
The set hasn’t been all that popular thus far, especially in comparison to more recent sets like 151 or Paldean Fates. Recently, a few Pokemon card collectors have been investigating the contradictory aspects of Twilight Masquerade and the reasons behind its apparent rift in the community on the internet.
Twilight Masquerade has left some Pokemon card collectors unimpressed, and some are even concerned that it might be a bad set. Others are eagerly anticipating the actual release day in order to build new decks with the newest chase cards.
Inquiring about the community’s thoughts on Twilight Masquerade, the original poster noted that they had “been seeing tons of hate on this set.” Reactions were not uniform.
Several readers commented on the specific cards they were looking for, describing Twilight Masquerade as a set that contained one or two strong cards among a few duds. One collector wrote, “The Greninja SIR is the only card in the entire set that I even remotely care about.” which I’ll purchase alone to save a ton of money.
Players were also thrilled with the Illustration Rares for Pinsir and Eevee, as well as the pair of Perrin and Hisuian Growlithe. In the next weeks, Twilight Masquerade contains a few cards whose values are probably going to rise swiftly.
“I feel like the main reason it seems to be getting meh reception is because a lot of people in the TCG community haven’t played the Kitakami DLC the set is based on,” said a player in an attempt to address the doubters.
Twilight Masquerade offers some of the most obvious theming and connections to the Pokemon video games of any of the most recent Pokemon Trading Card Games. While Twilight Masquerade expertly employs Kitakami’s lore and design with its set aesthetic and Pokemon Abilities, Temporal Forces paid homage to Scarlet & Violet.
Sets like 151 and Paldean Fates were almost like fan service for players of the Trading Card Game, but in a nice way. Without overtly referencing the video games, these sets catered to the desires of Pokemon card collectors for Shiny Pokemon, exquisite full-art pieces, and powerful Attacks in new expansion sets.
Compared to earlier expansion sets, Twilight Masquerade and the recently revealed Shrouded Fable are more in line with the lore and storyline of the current generation of Pokemon video games. It’s probable that just TCG aficionados aren’t as thrilled about this set because of this, as the Reddit user mentioned above.
That being said, there will still be plenty in this upcoming set to excite TCG gamers. Along with some potential Charizard-killing heavy hitters like Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex and Dragapult ex, there are a few extremely potent Trainer cards to look forward to.
