For those who don’t truly recall 2007, today is a huge day. Because this is the first time a brand-new BMW M5 Touring will ever be seen on the planet. These are not the kind of things that come along every year; this is only the third M5 Touring model that has ever left the BMW factory. And it’s enormous in every way.
Five meters long and nearly two meters wide is the size of the rigid body. When you fold down the rear seats, which are split-folding but not completely flat, the boot opens up to reveal a 1,630-liter space filled with lash points for anchoring your outdoor gear. Is it just us, or do you believe the chunky, stocky Touring looks better with the “M5” upgrades than the dowdy saloon?
Its oily and volt-y components are naturally shared beneath with the most recent M5 saloon, which is the first plug-in hybrid M5. If you overlook the XM, this is actually the first plug-in hybrid M vehicle. which we are pleased to do, just like the majority of purchasers around the world.
That indicates that there is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 577 horsepower at the other end of your wake-wind-board-surfing-e-bike. Yes, that is less than the V8 in the previous M5 (because BMW wants to comply with future stricter emissions regulations). However, an electric motor located in the gearbox then increases power to a total of 717bhp and 1000Nm (737 lb-ft).
You may now ogle the fact that it can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds or from 0 to 124 miles per hour in slightly more than 11 seconds. Indeed, by using tactical box-ticking, the top speed can be increased from 155 mph to 189 mph. But what about your lifestyle gear on the trailer behind, the jet-power, boat, board, and ski? Don’t worry, the M5 Touring can tow two tons, but you should expect the stated EV range of about forty miles to drop.
There is a lot of weight to shift in the M5 Touring, even when you are not connecting a recreational vehicle to the rear hitch. Much, really.
It weights 2,560kg because of its switchable four-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering, adaptive suspension, 18.6kWh battery, electronic tailgate, and lack of a carbon roof (BMW was unable to locate a source that could provide a long enough piece). which is more luggage than a Bentley Bentayga can carry.
Because it weighs half a ton less, the modern Audi RS6 Performance can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 0.2 seconds less than the BMW, even if it loses 100 horsepower.
The question is, would you rather have the quicker vehicle or that your neighbors didn’t paint-strip your £112,000 uberwagon because they were going to lie in and do V8 cold starts? At the very least, the hybrid M5 can make a peaceful departure.
