Expectations for WWE 2K24 are already high, even if publisher 2K Sports and developer Visual Concepts have not yet made an announcement. Following the dismal release of WWE 2K20, the franchise took a break before making a triumphant return with WWE 2K22 and then WWE 2K23. Though neither game is flawless, they have both established the framework for additional features. It is reasonable for fans to anticipate that WWE 2K24 will be revealed during the Royal Rumble in January, but there will be a lot of build-up between now and the official release.
Who will be the cover star of WWE 2K24 is undoubtedly the most anticipated question on everyone’s mind, and it will be intriguing to see how that superstar’s career is likely handled in the Showcase mode. It will be difficult to follow John Cena in WWE 2K23 Showcase mode, just like it is to follow him during a promo. WWE 2K24 will have a difficult time improving on the excellent Showcase Mode because of the imaginative decisions made in it.
Curiously, John Cena’s feud with CM Punk is one significant rivalry that is absent from WWE 2K23’s Cena showcase. It appears likely that fans will be able to recreate CM Punk in WWE 2K24’s standard matches or MyGM Mode now that he’s back in the company.
WWE 2K23 Was Better Because of John Cena’s Humility, But WWE 2K24 Was Harder
Contrary to what fans may have expected, John Cena’s WWE 2K23 Showcase Mode prioritized his losses above victories, such as those with Rey Mysterio. Being a major character in a game but for that to represent someone’s losses rather than their victories, seems a little ironic. Because Cena has always promoted perseverance and been modest, it works for him. It’s easy for someone who consistently wins to say that. It makes sense, though, that a lot of other WWE Superstars wouldn’t want a whole game mode centered around their career setbacks. Unlike Rey Mysterio’s in WWE 2K22, this Showcase Mode has the advantage of allowing gamers to play as many superstars as possible. Not just John Cena. This gave the game mode some much-needed variation that could not be obtained by concentrating only on a superstar’s victories.
As such, it’s a challenging position for WWE 2K24. The simplest option is to choose a cover star that has won some amazing matches, but since fans will be taking on this WWE hero for about a dozen matches, there will be some repetition in the Showcase Mode. It might only be a letdown compared to WWE 2K23, depending on who it is, but that’s still a difficult starting point. In honor of Windham Rotunda’s passing, there has been significant fan speculation over Bray Wyatt being the cover star for WWE 2K24. Given his superiority over other single superstars, this is perhaps the greatest choice. Because it would be so emotive, it would instantly sidestep any potential complaints and replace diversity with an abundance of love. However, it appears likely that WWE 2K24 would have selected its cover star before his demise. Though it’s not impossible, the train that is game development never really stops.
Including a group is yet another option. While The Judgment Day or The Bloodline may still have some fantastic matchups ahead of them, it could be a little early for WWE 2K24 to include them, but at least fans would have a pool of superstars to choose from. It might even have some interesting tag fights similar to The Usos or entertaining encounters at the ringside similar to The Judgment Day.
- Characters like Edge, Damian Priest, Finn Balor, “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio, JD McDonagh, and Rhea Ripley might all be playable in The Judgment Day.
- The Bloodline could have Roman Reigns, Jey Uso, Jimmy Uso, and Solo Sikoa as playable characters.
While following John Cena isn’t a desirable situation, WWE 2K24 developer Visual Concepts hasn’t given fans any cause for concern thus far. All fans have to do is wait and see what it accomplishes for both the game’s Showcase Mode and overall functionality.
