Today, Godzilla Minus One’s official Twitter account declared that the movie’s total box office receipts in Japan have surpassed 5 billion yen.
Godzilla Minus One, the 70th anniversary movie for Toho’s enduring brand, debuted in Japan on November 3, 2023. The tweet states that on January 3, 2024, 62 days after its Japanese premiere, the 30th Godzilla movie had made 5.01 billion yen (34.84 million USD) from 3.26 million admissions.
In addition, the movie debuted on December 1 in 2,308 North American cinemas. By January 2, it had earned 46,727,955 USD, surpassing Godzilla 2000: Millennium to become the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla picture in North America ever. According to a report published on December 22, the movie has already earned more than 10 billion yen (69.55 million USD) in total revenue globally, including in Japan.
Godzilla Minus One / C (Minus Color), the movie’s monochrome version, will open in 340 cinemas nationwide on January 12, 2024. The tweet further states that the version will be shown in Japanese cinemas MX4D and 4DX, with “70th-anniversary original art board” given to patrons as a treat.
