In ‘Wonderful World’ Kim Nam-joo immersively portrayed maternal love driven to the edge of a precipice, making the tension away from the first episode.
The first episode of MBC’s Friday drama ‘Wonderful World’ (screenplay written by Kim Ji-eun and directed by Lee Seung-young and Jung Sang-hee), which was first aired on the 1st, heightened the immersion by depicting the shocking situation in which Eun So-hyun (played by Kim Nam-Joo) loses her young son in a ridiculous accident and falls into the abyss as a murderer overnight at a time when she was feeling the happiest as a successful professor and writer.
The first episode started with the appearance of Kwon Sun-yul (played by Cha Eun-woo) pedaling toward Eun So-Hyun and charging hard, which raised curiosity from the opening. This is accompanied by a narration by Su-hyun that “it all started with the events of that day that summer”, which makes us wonder what kind of relationship Su-hyun and Sun-you have and why Sun-you wants to kill Su-hyun.
Then, the daily life of Suhyun, a successful professor and best-selling author, was depicted and caught the eye. While Suhyun’s book became the first book in Korea to win the Rosalyn Award and was so popular with the public that a fan signing event was held, Suhyun had a happy time with her husband Kang So Ho (played by Kim Kang Woo), a journalist with a strong sense of justice, and Han Yu Ri (played by Lim Se Mi), who was like a younger sister to Su Hyun who took care of her every move like a manager.
Among them, her husband, Su-ho, quits his job as a reporter while covering Kim Joon (played by Park Hyuk-Kwon), a politician who has a backward, and so-hyun arrives at the airport to go on a business trip, but when her husband, Su-ho, calls Gun-woo that he has a fever, he heads home again. Her son, who came home worried, but had a fever after taking fever-reducing pills, was playing with his dog Happy in the yard, and So-hyun, who was relieved of her worries and swept her chest, showed her sadness at Su-ho’s sad appearance of suffering psychologically after leaving her job, saying, “You were more righteous than any reporter.” At this time, Suhyun and Suho headed to the yard when they heard their dog Happy barking in the yard, and the atmosphere was reversed as the peaceful happiness was quickly shattered by Geon-woo, who disappeared with the gate open.
After searching all over the neighborhood for Gunwoo at night, they found only one of his shoes lying on the street. Eventually, Su-hyun ran into a nearby park with Geon-woo in an ambulance, bleeding through the ambulance and the crowd of people. However, Gunwoo has already missed the golden time and is in a critical condition. Even when she can’t use her hands anymore and has to give up, so-hyun can’t let go of her son’s hand and turns to her mother, Go-eun (played by Won Mi-Kyung), and asks, “Mom, how can I give up my child?” He poured out his desperate heart and made the viewers. Even when Gunwoo’s pacemaker stopped, so-hyun, who was cutting his nails, was. Suhyun blamed herself for all her successes and for not finding her son sooner, so she went to the park where Geon-woo had been found, curled up in the field preservation ship where her son was lying, and wept uncontrollably. On the other hand, the news made the world buzz by reporting that Gun-woo died in a car accident at a children’s protection area and that the perpetrator had abandoned Gun-woo while fleeing with him in a car, so he missed the golden time.
However, the trial took a different direction from what Su-hyun and Su-ho had in mind, causing tensions to soar. The perpetrator, Kwon Ji-woong (played by Oh Man-Seok), tried to take Geon-woo to the hospital as soon as possible, but when he couldn’t breathe, he knelt down and apologized to the people gathered with the excuse that he had abandoned him in a panic, and his lawyer turned to Su-Hyun and asked, “Did you close the door when you entered the house?” When asked, Suhyun replied, “I don’t remember much,” which increased his sadness. As a result, Su-hyun was constantly overwhelmed with guilt, thinking that her son’s death might have been due to her carelessness. In the end, the court sentenced the perpetrator to two years in prison and six months of probation, and the perpetrator was released. In addition, it was revealed that Kim Jun, the politician whom Su-ho was investigating, was involved with the perpetrator, which shocked him.
At the end of the play, Su-hyun finds out the address of the perpetrator, Ji-Woong, from Su-ho’s cell phone, and goes to him in person to demand an apology. Ji-woong, who was returning home with a cake to eat with his family, asked So-hyun, “Didn’t you get enough out of the courtroom?” He said, “How much does it cost? I’ll take care of you morally,” he said, throwing his business card over Gunwoo’s picture of Young-jeong, drawing his anger. In response, Suhyun said with a sad look in her eyes, “If you ruined my baby’s life, apologize straight,” and this time she grabbed the crotch of the offender’s pants and pleaded. But Ji-woong said, “Hey, do you know how many businesses I’m involved in? Why are you lying in my car?” he angrily pushed Suhyun away, which destroyed Gunwoo’s portrait. Blood dripped from Suhyun’s hands from the shards of broken glass between Gunwoo’s sunny face, and So-hyun climbed into the car in a rage that was bubbling up. He also said, “This fire will not be shaken anymore. From what I have heard, no one has ever returned from this abyss, and I will answer you without any shame. This is my answer”, and rushed towards the perpetrator while stepping on the accelerator, marking a strong ending.
In this way, ‘Wonderful World’ thrilled the theater with the maternal love on the edge of the cliff in which So-Hyun, who lost her son, jumped into the hellfire herself from the first broadcast. Kim Nam-joo, who created Eun So-hyun, responded to the expectations of viewers who have been waiting for six years with a confident performance. Kim Nam-Joo made viewers gasp with his explosive performance, from his confident charisma to the hurt and tears of a mother who lost her son. Cha Eun Woo as Kwon Seon Yul also made a strong appearance that made the curiosity soar. The opening with the melody of rushing toward So-Hyun and the image of So-hyun charging toward the perpetrator form a sumi correlation, hinting at the relationship between So-Hyun and melody, which seems to resemble each other, making us wait for the next episode to see how their relationship will play out in the future.
