In an effort to prevent Manchester City from winning the Premier League for the fifth time in a row, Mikel Arteta said that Arsenal’s players have shown a “want more” this season.
The Gunners were only two points behind Pep Guardiola’s team the previous season and have now finished second to City in the league.
Following the season’s penultimate game against Everton, Arteta and Arsenal hosted an event in central London that was attended by co-chairman Josh Kroenke, owner, players, and club employees.
“All the players were saying to me, ‘We’re going to be better, we’re going to do it, we want more,'” Arteta said.
“They are the ones driving that ambition, so that’s always positive.”
In their opening game of the season on Saturday at Emirates Stadium against Wolves, Arsenal’s Arteta says his team is looking forward to beginning their title challenge.
He declared, “We are really excited.” “It’s been too long for us to miss the competition—many weeks.
“We’re incredibly excited about it and eager to get started.
“The preseason was incredibly difficult for us. The group has appeared incredibly talented, focused, and eager to play.”
It’s not possible for any Premier League team to increase their point total for five straight seasons, but Arsenal could need to accomplish that in order to win the title for the first time since 2004.
Arsenal has improved season by season thus far, going from scoring just 56 points in 2019–20 to 89 points in the previous campaign.
Former England captain Alan Shearer stated that “the one thing they are missing… is a goalscorer” when discussing Arsenal’s chances of winning the league in his BBC Sport column.
Shearer said: “If Arsenal sign a top striker then I would back them to go on and win the league.”
Although the manager encourages the group to get stronger, Arteta believes his team is still far from being the finished product. As such, attempts are being made to bolster the roster.
Arteta remarked, “We’re still very far from perfection.”
“This squad has more to achieve, and from watching them practice and play every day, I have every reason to think that they can do it.
“I believe there is still big room to improve.”
