Director of Baldur Gate 3 and CEO of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, has announced Patch 7, which will provide players access to official modding tools and maybe the game’s last significant content update.
On June 14, 2024, Vincke spoke about the update and Larian’s future intentions during a masterclass organized by the BAFTAs called An Evening with Baldur’s Gate 3.
“One of the big things for us, and the one that we’re really working towards now, is the ability for players to mod [Baldur’s Gate 3] themselves because then they will be able to make their own things,” the director expressed excitement about introducing official mod support, as reported by Eurogamer.
Vincke continued by referring to the September 2024 release of Patch 7, which will allow users to develop and contribute content to the game, as “the point where we’re going to say ‘ok, now it’s yours fully.”
Although Larian does not intend to discontinue support for Baldur’s Gate 3 altogether in the near future, Vincke suggests that gamers shouldn’t anticipate any additional significant content releases.
After Patch 7 is released, Vincke predicts that “you will see the level of support diminished to really critical bug fixes,” despite the fact that the devs are “still working as if the game was just out.”
Naturally, since the game’s release, players have been able to enjoy a variety of gameplay features, such as increasing the level cap and increasing the size of the party, as well as the return of deleted scenes and the strange decision to arm Asterion.
On the other hand, creating and sharing mods will be much simpler with Larian’s official tools. Console gamers will be able to use (but not create) mods for the first time with this update, but fans won’t be able to produce new story content.
Although many players will probably be disappointed by the absence of new content for Baldur’s Gate 3, this is not surprising because Larian has already stated that neither DLC nor Baldur’s Gate 4 will be produced.
