If you can’t get enough of the live-action adaptation, Netflix is working on a new One Piece animation that is gaining a lot of momentum.
One Piece is one of the most iconic franchises ever. Eiichiro Oda’s manga, which has been one of the greatest anime for decades, is getting better and better, drawing more readers to Luffy’s journey across the oceans.
But as the current show surpassed 1,000 episodes, it got a little harder to recruit new viewers. Presenting The One Piece, a fresh animation that is reimagining the manga.
Although this is an ambitious project, the people participating have the necessary experience, so here is what we currently know.
Who is producing One Piece?
WIT Studio, the production firm behind Attack on Titan’s first three seasons, Spy x Family, Vinland Saga’s first season, Ranking of Kings, and many other shows, is animating One Piece. As the exclusive distributor, Netflix is collaborating with them.
Masashi Koizuka, who oversaw several Attack of Titan episodes, is directing One Piece. Hideaki Abe, who has experience with Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, is serving as assistant director. They are artists with the ability to shape a hit, and One Piece is precisely deserving of that.
One Piece has undergone a total makeover.
The East Blue Saga, the first story in the manga, when Luffy first meets the Straw Hats, is where One Piece begins. It’s a fresh, contemporary retelling of the tale based on modern anime concepts.
With its modern methods and standards, this One Piece will resemble a series like Jujutsu Kaisen or Blue Lock. One significant difference is that the first episode will be 16:9, whereas the first 204 episodes of the current One Piece anime are 4:3.
The group was urged by Eiichiro Oda to add their own unique touch to his masterpiece. He was reported during One Piece Day 2024 as saying, “The anime staff should digest and remake the manga in their own style, rather than faithfully reproducing it.”
The One Piece animation on Netflix won’t take the place of the original
After more than 1100 episodes, the original One Piece anime is still going strong. Netflix’s relaunch is only offering a convenient entry point for enthusiasts who wish to delve into the series or who haven’t revisited the initial stories after becoming involved more recently.
The Netflix and Toei versions will coexist for the time being. Since they are telling quite different stories—the first show is currently entering the Final Saga, while this one has hundreds of episodes left to air until then—they aren’t competing.
Is there a preview for The One Piece?
A significant amount of concept art was unveiled on One Piece Day 2024, serving as a potent teaser for The One Piece. A few early-comic scenes are shown to us, rendered in a vivid, pastel style.
Even while more is probably still a long way off, this is plenty to give fans peace of mind that this project is in capable hands.
