This month, Nvidia is releasing three new RTX 40-series Super cards that deliver increased performance at cost points comparable to or superior to those of previous models. Gamers have taken issue with the RTX 40-series pricing, especially with the RTX 4080. On January 31st, Nvidia will replace this GPU with the RTX 4080 Super, which will retail for $999 less.
The $200 price reduction will significantly impact AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XT ($899) and XTX ($999) graphics cards. Prior to the release of the RTX 4080 Super, there will be a price release for the RTX 4070 Super on January 17th at $599 and the RTX 4070 Ti Super on January 24th at $799, which will include some interesting modifications. In addition, Nvidia is discontinuing the RTX 4070 Ti, although the RTX 4070 will continue to be available for $549 less.
RTX 4080 Super
Like the RTX 4080 before it, the RTX 4080 Super comes with Nvidia’s entire AD103 processor. It comes with the same 16GB G6X memory that arrives with more CUDA cores and quicker memory with a bandwidth of 736GB/s. It can demand up to 320 watts of power.
Rather than targeting adopters of the RTX 40 series, Nvidia is targeting the RTX 4080 Super at current users of the RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 2080 Super. Depending on the games, the performance increase over an RTX 4080 should range from one to five percent. That means that for $200 less, you can have performance comparable to, or even better than, an RTX 4080.
RTX 4070 Ti Super
Of the three RTX 40-series Super GPUs, the RTX 4070 Ti Super appears to be the most intriguing card. The G6X’s memory has been increased by Nvidia to 16GB, and it has been converted from the 192-bit memory bus of the original RTX 4070 Ti to the 256-bit memory bus found in the RTX 4080 and 4090 cards.
With more CUDA cores, this feels like a more significant improvement than the RTX 4080 Super adjustments. It will still cost $799, but it will have more RAM and perform better. According to Nvidia, the RTX 4070 Ti Super should perform about 10% better than the original RTX 4070 Ti.
To get this increased performance, Nvidia hasn’t had to give up any additional power usage either. The RTX 4070 Ti Super does not come in a Founders Edition version, but it will ship with the same 285-watt maximum power draw as the original.
RTX 4070 Super
The new RTX 4070 Super, according to Nvidia, will outperform the RTX 3090 in terms of speed while using up to 220 watts less power. That is only 20 watts more than the previous RTX 4070, which at 1440p was able to provide performance that was comparable to that of the RTX 3080. With 12GB of G6X RAM and the same 192-bit memory bus, Nvidia is increasing the number of CUDA cores to improve performance.
The RTX 4070 Super is scheduled to ship on January 17th for $599, the same price as the original, which may entice owners of the RTX 3070 or 2070 to upgrade. Additionally, according to Nvidia, the RTX 4070 Super will perform about 15% better than the regular RTX 4070.
Nvidia’s Founders Edition cards will be available for the RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Super. Though Nvidia chose to make these cards stand out with a slightly darker alloy frame, they otherwise appear the same as the original versions. Third-party manufacturers like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, PNY, and many more will offer a plethora of possibilities if Nvidia’s own Founders Editions are not to your liking.
