I worried that Immortals of Aveum, the EA Original first-person shooter from Ascendant Studios, would get lost in the shuffle of more well-known releases like Starfield when it first came out, and it turns out I was correct.
Bret Robbins, director of the Immortals of Aveum video game and CEO of Ascendant, told Windows Central that the extremely packed release schedule this year made it difficult for the studio’s inaugural project to find a buyer.
“We were not in a position where we could delay or push out of our launch window,” Robbins stated. “You set those windows quite a bit ahead of time because you’re spending marketing dollars, you have commitments to a particular date.”
Further complicating Immortals of Aveum’s route to success, Robbins stated that “no one anticipated” Baldur’s Gate 3 to become the phenomenon it eventually became. To be honest, Larian’s Golden Joystick-winning role-playing game was published just a few weeks before Immortals of Aveum and completely took over the conversation, surpassing all expectations and receiving praise from both players and critics.
“I’ve never seen a year like this,” he stated. It might be not easy to stand out from the crowd when you’re a new IP or a studio that people haven’t heard of before. It was quite hard to try to raise awareness for us. For a new IP, it’s always challenging, but this year was ten times as difficult.”
It’s important to note that, although I thoroughly loved the game and believe that its pleasantly retro approach to single-player shooters merits more recognition, our review of Immortals of Aveum basically agrees with many others when they state that it isn’t flawless.
Recently, new endgame content, numerous performance enhancements, some quality-of-life adjustments, a New Game Plus feature, and more were added to the shooter with its first major update, Echollector.
