Major Netflix Breach

There appears to have been a significant Netflix breach as Dandadan, the Ranma 1/2 remake, Terminator Zero, the next Mononoke film, and possibly more have been leaked online.

Episodes of Dandadan, Mappa’s Ranma 1/2 adaptation, Terminator Zero, and the recently released Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain started making the rounds on the internet on August 6, 2024. Through piracy websites, short films are being shared on social media in addition to their full-length counterparts.

Hardcoded timestamps and the low quality of the leaked copies imply they originated from somewhere in the production pipeline. Although the specific source of the leak is unknown, it is thought that Netflix Japan’s leaker is to blame. This theory is supported by the Japanese language that appears in certain impacted releases without subtitles or dubbing.

Ranma 1/2 and Terminator will both be available on Netflix worldwide, while Dandadan is being handled by the service in Japan and on Crunchyroll abroad. Mononoke the Movie debuted exclusively on July 20, 2024, at the Fantasia Foreign Film Festival in Montreal, and as of this writing, no foreign distributor has been confirmed.

Regarding these leaks, neither Netflix nor any other business connected to these films has acknowledged them or offered any commentary. Dandadan, which began a limited theatrical run on September 13, will be released in October. Around the same time, Ranma 1/2 will be available on Netflix, beginning on October 6.

Mononoke has not yet been given a distribution date, but considering the festival premiere, it seems likely that it will happen later this year as well. The first installment of a trilogy that will recreate the chic cult anime series from 2007 is called Phantom in the Rain.

The popular comic by Yukinobu Tatsu, which centers on two high school students who push each other’s cynicisms to absurd limits—one a ghost skeptic and the other a UFO denier—is being adapted by Dandadan. At Anime Expo 2024, the first two episodes were screened to overwhelmingly positive reviews.

A popular 1980s television series about a teenage martial artist who changes gender when exposed to specific temperatures is being recreated as Ranma 1/2.

We’ve contacted Netflix to inquire, and we’ll let you know if we hear back.
