The vast open world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is filled with sinister mysteries revealed by the most improbable of people—people who, upon first look, seem to defy expectations as the purveyors of such mysterious stories.
There is no shortage of detective work in store for gamers, ranging from a missing Blackwater sports team to a mad scientist in RDR2 who constructed a robot and died. Certain mysteries are based on real-life events or persons, while other stories are completely made up.
A story from the press introduces this mystery. A disturbing account about the disappearance of the local athletics team, Blackwater Athletics, may be found in the Blackwater Ledger No. 69. According to the story, Blackwater Athletic Club members disappeared after leaving the town’s northern boundary for a group run. They are still elusive in spite of intensive search attempts. The report’s first conjecture on an Indian kidnapping is refuted by the fact that there haven’t been any recent instances of cattle theft or tribal abductions. However, Red Dead Redemption 2’s explanation for this riddle may be the most sinister of them.
The Suspicious Case of Blackwater’s Athletics Team’s Disappearance
- Letter ‘B’ formed by legs for Blackwater
- believed at first to be an attack by Native Americans
- allusions to the Los Maniceros massacre in real life
For players, discovering the team’s sad fate is not too difficult. A mass burial to the west of the town has ten men’s bodies with their limbs severed. Despite their being ten bodies, each player is identifiable by their uniform, and none of them appear to be missing any limbs. Dismembered limbs arranged in a precise “B” shape in a mound of earth close to the burial, probably symbolizing Blackwater Athletics, reveal a startling discovery. In Blackwater, there were first rumors of a Native American attack, but the reality is much darker and wilder than expected.
The Blackwater Athletics Club incident is similar to the actual Los Maniceros tragedy, in which twelve players from an amateur football club in Colombia were abducted and just one person made it out alive. The National Liberation Army of Colombia is said to have been the cause of the killings, however, this is still a mystery. This connection is made in Red Dead Redemption 2 when the National Liberation Army leader is referred to as El Payaso, or “the clown,” which explains why two of the game’s victims have clown masks on.
The Murderer of the Blackwater Athletics Team
The killings in the Red Dead Redemption 2 universe have a fascinating backstory. Players discover three bodies with unsettling graffiti nearby as they progress through the American Dream mission. Under Lucky’s Cabin, if they venture farther, they find a map that points to Edmund Lowry Jr.’s hiding place. Players discover articles concerning Lowry’s murders in the West Elizabeth area, which happen to coincide with the disappearance of the Blackwater crew, in this eerie basement. Another unsettling discovery in the basement almost proves the identity of the murderer: a human “B” similar to the one found at the Blackwater crime site.
At least not by going after Lowry, there is no surefire way to bring the Blackwater Athletics Team to justice. Players will enter a struggle where they must fend off a similar, terrible fate if they confront him with their knife. The player will have to shoot Lowry in an aggressive attack if they try to drag him to the Sheriff’s office in an RDR2 town. Even though the Blackwater victims’ bodies aren’t as disfigured, reports indicate that Lowry employed a variety of techniques, including drowning.
