Concord has at last been brought to light a year after its revelation. To give fans a sneak peek at the game, PlayStation’s in-house live-service hero shooter now has a release date and some early gameplay. Everything you require is provided here.
Concord was first shown as one of PlayStation Studios’ new initiatives in the live-service market back in 2023. While some of those projects—like The Last of Us Factions—haven’t materialized for a variety of reasons, Concord has continued on course and is now imminent.
Concord, which was once referred to be a PVP first-person shooter, is actually Sony’s take on the hero shooter genre, allowing players to match up characters with different skills and loadouts in an endlessly replayable multiplayer environment.
After a thorough examination at the PlayStation State of Play event in May 2024, we now have a lot of information regarding the impending release. Here’s the complete breakdown on Concord, including information on its Early Access Beta and initial gameplay details.
Concord’s release date
The official release date of Concord is Friday, August 23, 2024.
During Sony’s May 2024 State of Play show, the complete gameplay reveal included a locked-in release date.
Is Playing Concord Free?
Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, Concord looks to be a paid release rather than a free-to-play game. The developers plan to release information on “Concord’s editions and launch pre-orders” soon, as stated in a May 30 update on the PlayStation Blog.
There must be a cost to play the game, as evidenced by the fact that it will be offered in several versions and even be available for pre-order. We’ll simply have to wait and see, though, as there’s always a chance that a more basic F2P version will be released as well.
Concordant systems
Concord is scheduled for simultaneous release on the PS5 and PC. This is only the second simultaneous launch in Sony’s history, coming right after the hugely successful Helldivers 2 launch earlier this year, which broke all previous records for the most players on the platform.
Concorn is most likely a current-gen exclusive since there has been no indication of a PS4 release.
Concord Beta
The date of Concord’s beta release has not yet been confirmed, but we are positive that it will happen. Arriving “later this summer,” there’s a chance the Beta might even coincide with the August full release, though that’s just speculation.
Pre-ordering Concord looks to grant some early access to the Beta, with a public beta period opening up soon for all interested parties. You may be sure that we’ll keep you informed as more information about how to play Concord becomes available.
Details on Concord’s gameplay
At its core, Concord is a 5v5 hero shooter that features a variety of unique characters, each with their own special skills. Gunskill alone won’t win you games, even though the development team has prioritized FPS basics “from the very beginning” in their quest to “make a tight, well-balanced FPS that feels great to play.”
The developers have hinted that “aiming and thumb skill alone aren’t always enough to come out on top.” With 16 characters, known as Freegunners, on the launch roster, there are already several game-changing skills in focus, some of which may seem rather familiar.
There’s a walling-off skill that lets you stop someone’s line of sight, like to Mei’s in Overwatch 2. Similar to Winston’s bubble in Overwatch 2, another character has the ability to create a “bullet-blocking” dome in the interim. Even some of the explosive traps would definitely appeal to Junkrat.
There will be combat between two factions of Freegunners in a number of distinct game types; however, it is unclear exactly how these will unfold and what their goals will be.
Beyond real-time combat action, Concord is billed as a live-service game that develops its narrative over time. Weekly cinematics will be made available starting at launch, as the developers provide fans with fresh character arcs, story points, and other content on a weekly schedule.
Concord developers
Under the PlayStation Studios banner, Firewalk Studios is a Washington-based development team working on Concord. Since its founding in 2018, the group has allegedly grown to employ more than 100 people full-time, and it is currently preparing to launch its first project in Concord.
Ryan Ellis, a co-founder of the studio, works for Concord as the game director. Ellis worked as Technical Art Director for the first Destiny and was credited as Creative Director for Destiny 2, but he is most known for his seven years at Bungie.
It just so happens that Concord has Bungie as a supporting studio. Although the specifics of the partnership are unknown, Bungie’s proficiency in the live-service market played a major role in Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of the company in 2022. Thus, there’s a good likelihood that Bungie alums contributed to the Concord content model.
