Since receiving armor has been a “unexciting reward” in Destiny 2 for a long time, Bungie plans to entirely redesign it with the release of Frontiers, the game’s upcoming big expansion.
The Final Shape marked the conclusion of Bungie’s first major universe storyline and the culmination of the Light and Darkness tale. Although the details of what happens next are still a little unclear, we do know that Frontiers is the codename for the major plot point that will be revealed early in 2019.
Exactly what it looks like is anyone’s guess for now, but developers are starting to let Guardians in on a few secrets before we get there. Specifically, we can now be assured that armor will undergo a total redesign at the arrival of the next period.
Developers are completely altering the way armor works, as revealed in a lengthy blog post dated October 1, 2024, to both enhance the reward path and encourage innovative builds. This is an overview of all the changes.
What armor in Destiny 2 is changing?
First, it’s vital to remember the modifications will be incremental over “the year ahead,” as Bungie noted. The changes won’t happen all at once; rather, they will happen gradually as Frontiers approaches.
Armor numbers are being completely redesigned to “be more impactful, less confusing, and less restricting,” which is the biggest change. Without going into too much detail, we can say that stat effects will no longer be tier-based at intervals of 10 points. Rather, each point assigned to a metric will yield a significant advantage.
The goal, according to Bungie, is to weigh numbers differently, with some armor giving “spikes” to particular stats, as opposed to many pieces of gear falling in the middle, dispersing stats, and not significantly altering gameplay.
As a result, each stat point will have a benefit and there will be fewer distinct stats on each piece of armor, with higher contributions to these metrics. In the end, these adjustments need to make each piece of armor more intriguing and simpler to assess.
Then, changes will be made to the stats themselves, with updates planned for Strength, Discipline, and Special Ammo. Bungie is evaluating how these particular bonuses work to increase the overall impact.
Not to mention, actual set bonuses are now being developed. Although seasoned Guardians have undoubtedly received certain set bonuses in the past, particularly with the occasional raid set over time, this feature is currently being extended to all Guardians.
Guardians who wear two or four pieces of the same set of armor will have access to special benefits. This implies that you can mix and match from two separate sets to receive two different advantages, or you can fully commit to one certain playstyle.
Every set is supposed to “represent the theme of the armor,” which implies that PVP equipment will probably offer advantages to aid in the Crucible, for example.
We are aware that the current Legendary armor will “be changed as little as possible” when these adjustments take effect. This also applies to the majority of exotics, at least during the first redesign. Bungie has promised that a way will exist for players to alter some of their favorite pieces of armor so that their stats reflect the new adjustments.
Frontiers has no set release date as of yet, so we’ll have to wait and see when all of these armor adjustments are finished as well as what new content we may expect. Be assured that as launch approaches, we’ll keep you informed of anything new.
