The Godzilla franchise has lost one of its most iconic stars, as Japanese actor Kenpachiro Satsuma, who played Godzilla in 12 films over 18 years, has died at the age of 76.
Satsuma first stepped into the oversized rubber suit to play the infamous monster back in 1984’s “The Return of Godzilla.” His imposing 6’3″ frame and extensive martial arts training made him the perfect fit to portray the King of the Monsters. Over his nearly two-decade run, Satsuma defined the fierceness, power, and personality of Godzilla for an entire generation of fans.
Beyond just wearing the suit, Satsuma approached the role with an actor’s commitment and discipline. He studied the movements of beasts at the zoo to capture Godzilla’s prideful fury. The performer even made sure to portray Godzilla’s anger through subtle gestures, from revenge-filled glares to bellowing roars. And thanks to Satsuma’s athleticism, his Godzilla was the most agile and fierce version yet.
Through his skill and flair for performance, Satsuma helped cement Godzilla as a beloved cultural icon around the world. From Japan to America, the giant monster was no longer just some guy in a rubber suit – Satsuma made him a true character that still captures imaginations today.
Godzilla movies just won’t feel quite the same without the Satsuma’s larger-than-life presence, but his towering legacy lives on. Whenever Godzilla returns to trample Tokyo again, Satsuma’s influence is sure to still be felt in the King of Monster’s every earth-shaking step.
