Though Christopher Judge’s portrayal of an aged Kratos in the most recent God of War games has garnered him tremendous praise, it seems unlikely that he will be playing the youthful Ghost of Sparta in the classic trilogy anytime soon. The furious Spartan warrior Kratos was voiced by Terrence C. Carson, who is also well known for portraying Jedi Master Mace Windu in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and a number of Star Wars video games during the early 2000s, before Judge took up the character in 2018’s God of War.
When Carson voiced Kratos in the first God of War video game, he was at his most irrational and was fighting an increasingly deadly war against the Gods of Olympus. This stands in stark contrast to Christopher Judge’s portrayal of the former Ghost of Sparta, who attempts to create a more peaceful future with his son Atreus while being an older and more weary outsider tormented by his old demons. The differences between these two Kratos were highlighted in the God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC, where the elder Kratos, having had a torturous journey through the Viking afterlife, faced his former self.
The reason why the Kratos from the past was mute in God of War Ragnarok’s concluding sequence is probably because Christopher Judge declined to speak for him in honor of Terrence C. Carson’s contributions from the first three films. In a short video that YouTuber AbdBay uploaded, Judge praised Carson’s performance and clarified that he never intended to “match” Carson while presenting his own interpretation of Kratos. He continues by saying that he was recently approached for a job in which he would have had to imitate Carson’s younger Kratos; however, Judge declined the offer because he believed it would have been insensitive to him.
Though nothing official has been verified yet, insiders have recently begun to speculate that a remaster of the first three God of War games may be in the works for the PlayStation 5. A remaster of Kratos’s legendary voyage through Greek mythology has been long-awaited by fans, particularly since the original two God of War games were only ever re-released on the PlayStation 3. God of War 3, which came out in 2010, was remastered for the PlayStation 4 in 2015.
Fans who started playing the God of War series with the more recent Norse games may get the opportunity to play as Terrence C. Carson’s iconic Kratos if the reports of a remastered God of War trilogy collection are accurate. According to Christopher Judge, this Kratos is very different from the one he portrayed in last year’s God of War Ragnarok, which received high praise from critics. Because of this, Christopher Judge will not provide the voice of the younger Ghost of Sparta in any upcoming God of War endeavors, whether they involve a new prequel or a repackaging of the earlier games.
