BitBoy, a gadget that resembles a Game Boy and allows users to earn Bitcoin while they play, was unveiled by OrdzGames.
Retro gaming handhelds are still influenced by the original Nintendo Game Boy. Thirty-five years after the original handheld’s release, gadgets such as the Analogue Pocket and the Miyoo Mini+ continue to honor the now-iconic design.
The most recent in a long line of portable devices modeled after the iconic Game Boy design is the BitBoy. However, the BitBoy isn’t meant to be used to play the Game Boy games you grew up with, in contrast to other vintage gadgets. The Game Boy-like gadget is made for enthusiasts of cryptocurrency, though.
With the BitBoy, which made its debut at this year’s Web3 Gaming Expo in Hong Kong, users may earn Bitcoin while engaging in games that utilize the cryptocurrency.
The handheld device is designed to run games from OrdzGames’ “trustless, non-custodial” game platform.
The portable looks like it was inspired by a Nintendo device with its orange, translucent plastic design. But in contrast to the original Game Boy, the BitBoy has 32GB of internal memory, a 3.45-inch 64×480 display, and a RockChip RK3566 processor. Decrypt claims that the portable will retail for $500 and that pre-orders will open later this month.
OrdzGames told the Decrypt team that although the BitBoy is primarily intended for cryptocurrency fans, it can also run emulators and is “powerful enough to run games from the original Sony PlayStation.”
Some more handheld gaming devices with RK3566 chips include the inexpensive Anbernic RG353P ($119). That crypto functionality is therefore available at a hefty charge.
The handheld is also available digitally for anyone who would like to possess a BitBoy of their own. Although enthusiasts of classic video games might like a more material object, the BitBoy will also be sold digitally via the Bitcoin network.
